What is Brow Lift Surgery?

A brow lift, or forehead lift, focuses on lifting the eyebrow by repositioning the forehead skin to improve the appearance of ptotic eyebrows. This creates an instant improvement for patients giving them a fresher, younger, more “awakened” look. Dr. Rothaus is an experienced brow lift surgeon and offers numerous techniques depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals and skin condition.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Brow Lift Procedure?

The most fitting candidates for brow lift surgery include individuals who have:

  • Brows that produce a “tired-looking” appearance or give the appearance of “frowning”
  • Eyelids that sag due to a droopy brow
  • Wrinkles along the brow
  • Good health overall and are non-smokers

How Does Brow Lift Surgery Work?

We will give an overall evaluation to determine if the patient can benefit from brow lift surgery or if a procedure like an eye lift is a better fit. Several possible techniques can be used during a brow lift. Some common approaches at Rothaus Plastic Surgery include a short temporal incision on each side of the scalp (limited incision blepharoplasty), an endoscopic brow lift with several small incisions inside the hairline on the top of the scalp, or a coronal incision, which is a slightly more invasive approach, utilizing an incision that runs from ear to ear several centimeters behind the hairline.

Some patients whose concern is limited to the shape and position of the eyebrows can be corrected with a transcutaneous eyebrow shaping (TCES) procedure. TCES can be performed under a local anesthesia, results in an immediate improvement in the shape and position of the eyebrows, and creates a well-hidden surgical incision. It is performed under a local anesthesia, takes under one hour, has little to no recovery, and does not interfere with normal activities. For patients with thinning eyebrows as well, this can be followed up with a hair transplant for the eyebrows.

What is the Recovery like After Brow Lift Surgery?

The amount of bruising after brow lift surgery differs for each procedure. There is almost no bruising, swelling, or recovery with TCES. A patient undergoing a full coronal brow lift can expect at least one to two weeks of swelling. The patients undergoing the limited incision temporal brow lift or the endoscopic brow lift can expect a period of swelling and recovery in between the first two mentioned.
