Historically, a strong jawline has been a symbol of beauty and strength. With age, however, a once-powerful chin may become weaker in appearance due to sagging skin. Others may not have been as blessed by genetics and are striving to achieve the strong chin they have always dreamed of.
What is Chin Augmentation?
Mentoplasty, or chin augmentation, is an effective treatment for improving a recessed or weak chin. This is a cosmetic procedure that adds a flexible, solid silicone implant to improve appearance. The implant will be placed within a surgically created pocket in the chin. The incision is usually made inside the mouth or in the small creases beneath the chin, so scarring is nearly invisible. Mentoplasty can positively affect both a man and woman’s self-esteem by creating a stronger profile.
Volumizing fillers such as autologous fat, Sculptra®, Restylane® Lyft and Defyne, and Juvéderm® Voluma can present viable alternatives to chin implant surgery. Prior to surgery, Dr. Rothaus will discuss which size and shape of implant will achieve the best results for the patient.
Who is a Good Candidate for Mentoplasty?
You are an ideal candidate for chin augmentation if you are in good overall health, without underlying conditions that could complicate your surgery. You also should have realistic expectations and a positive outlook. If you want to improve your facial profile, you may be recommended to undergo this procedure.
The best candidates for a chin augmentation procedure are women and men who possess:
- A “weak” or recessed chin
- Poor definition of the neck
- Structural facial imbalances
Your Consultation With Our NY Plastic Surgeon
Your consultation with Dr. Rothaus will involve a physical examination of your chin area. A review of your medical history will be conducted to determine if you are compatible for the procedure. A discussion of your goals and expectations will be done before Dr. Rothaus can formulate a treatment plan for you.
How Do I Prepare for Chin Augmentation Surgery?
Weeks prior to your surgery, you should stop smoking to ensure proper healing and recovery. Get your major errands out of the way so you can come home to a neat house after your surgery. Avoid certain medications such as aspirin and NSAIDs, as well as herbal supplements.
The day prior to surgery, get enough rest and sleep. Wear button-down or zip-up garments on the day of your procedure.
What is the Procedure for Chin Augmentation?
We will evaluate the structure of the patient’s face, neck, and dental bite. Some patients possess a severe overbite (lower teeth behind upper teeth) causing the microgenia. In this case, these patients may be good candidates for other treatments, such as jaw surgery. An X-ray may be useful to examine the bone and facial profile to determine a treatment plan. In some cases, liposuction in the neck and submental region (under the chin) simultaneous with the mentoplasty may be used to help create a more defined jawline.
What Should I Expect for Chin Augmentation Recovery Time?
Recovery time depends on the nature of the surgery. Chin implants require a shorter downtime than mandibular advancement surgery (splitting the jaw and moving it forward). Bruising and swelling are common. A tape dressing is applied post-surgery to help keep the implant in place, reduce the swelling and to allow the overlying tissue time to adapt to bone or implants. Swelling and bruising will begin to dissipate after seven to 10 days; however, this time differs from patient to patient.
Plan Your Procedure
Recovery Time: 1-2 weeks
Average Procedure Time: 60-90 minutes
Procedure Recovery Location: Outpatient
Cost of Chin Augmentation
The cost of chin augmentation depends on several factors and varies from one patient to another. The overall price may be impacted by anesthetic and surgical fees, which will reflect the complexity of the procedure.
