There are multiple methods that people pursue to counteract the dimpled, uneven, orange-peel texture of skin caused by cellulite. Potions, creams, pills, massages, diet, exercise, and various other treatments often leave people disappointed because of inadequate results.

What Exactly is Cellulite?

Cellulite is the dimpled, lumpy flesh that appears on the outer thighs, hips, butt, and abdomen. While the appearance of cellulite is more common among women, it can definitely also be found in men. The exact cause of why cellulite forms is unclear, but many researchers believe fat herniates between fibrous bands that run between the skin and the underlying fascia. The fat accounts for the bulge and the skin tented down by the fibrous band for the dimple. It is a myth that cellulite is only found on those who are overweight. Cellulite can be found on both thin and overweight bodies, and while it is not considered a serious medical condition, it is aesthetically unattractive and undesirable.

What is the Treatment for Cellulite?

Individuals with cellulite that is visible can often feel embarrassed and lose confidence when wearing shorts or other clothing where the legs are exposed. When pockets of cellulite form under the skin, the result is a bumpy, uneven skin texture that looks uneven and unappealing. While liposuction can sometimes help reduce the appearance of cellulite, it is certainly not a cure-all procedure, and in many situations, patients simply do not want to have surgery.

The reason most cellulite treatments are ineffective is because they don’t treat the real causes behind the appearance of cellulite: structural skin issues below the surface. These structural problems involve tight, inflexible bands of connective tissue that surround fat cells beneath the skin. When enlarged pockets of fat are trapped by these rigid bands, the fat pushes up against the skin, causing an uneven appearance. The effect is worsened when the skin is thin.

Cellulite treatments and cellulite reduction treatments use laser energy, and are a non-invasive way to treat cellulite and attain a smoother skin appearance. By using radiofrequency, heat is applied to the cellulite to tighten skin and eliminate the fat cells, which helps improve body contours.

Our New York plastic surgery office also offers three state-of-the-art technologies for patients desiring cellulite reduction: Cellulaze™, the EndyMed™ bipolar RF device, and the ThermiSmooth® 250 monopolar RF device.

How Does Cellulite Treatment Work?

Cellulaze™ by Cynosure is the only cellulite treatment to get to the root of unsightly cellulite, going beneath the skin to release these rigid connective bands, reduce the lumpy pockets of fat, and thicken the skin to promote a smoother, healthier appearance. Cellulaze™ is best for women who have mild to moderate cellulite without being significantly overweight.

Both of the latter in-house devices work in similar ways. The EndyMed™ patented ‘3DEEP’ technology and ThermiSmooth®’s advanced RF heat help tighten the skin, which improves the appearance of dimples and grooves caused by cellulite. The collagen production created by these devices continues to assist in smoothing the skin over time. Secondly, they both cause a reduction in the underlying fat which also improves the appearance of the cellulite.

Most treatments take about 45 minutes to one hour, depending on how many areas are being treated and the size of each area. Patients normally return to get additional cellulite reduction treatments once a week for six to eight weeks, until they have achieved their desired results.

What is the Cellulaze™ Procedure?

Cellulaze™ is a minimally invasive surgery that typically requires only a local anesthetic, so there is little discomfort during the procedure. The procedure itself begins with the physician marking the areas of cellulite to be treated and making a couple of minuscule incisions about the size of a pen tip. The SideLaze 3D fiber laser is then threaded through a very small tube (called a cannula) and inserted into the skin through the incision sites. The laser fiber is used to target and level out pockets of fat, release the rigid, fibrous bands that can cause dimpling in the skin, and deliver energy to the hypo dermal layer of skin, promoting collagen growth to increase the skin’s thickness, smoothness, and elasticity. Depending on the size of the treated area, the procedure can take from one to two hours.

What is Recovery from Cellulaze™ Like?

Following the procedure, soreness and light bruising can occur, as well as leaking of small amounts of fluid from the incision site, but normal, everyday activities can be resumed after a day or two. More strenuous activities may be resumed after one to two weeks. The physician may also suggest wearing a compression garment during the recovery period.

What is Cellulite Reduction Treatment Like?

Cellulite reduction treatments are noninvasive. During the procedure, the handheld device safely moves over the skin, which is first prepared with a gel for smooth gliding. The heat produced by the radiofrequency energy works to tighten the skin and induce apoptosis, which means fat cell death. Over the course of days and weeks, the body naturally eliminates these dead cells, leaving the skin to have a smoother, more attractive contour.

What is the Recovery Time Cellulite Reduction?

For the first couple of days following a cellulite reduction treatment, the patient may see mild swelling and redness, but this should subside quickly. We tell patients that results will not be noticeable immediately, but the full impact of this treatment typically takes about six months. Over time, patients notice a reduction in the appearance of cellulite and skin dimpling, and an improvement in the contour and suppleness of their skin.

What Results Can I Expect from My Cellulite Treatment?

Results from the procedure continue to improve over a period of three to 12 months. Effective results are usually achieved from one treatment and may last for a year or longer.
