What is Restylane®?
Restylane® is an injectable dermal filler used to add volume, smoothen out wrinkles and creases on the face, and rejuvenate the nasolabial folds and the lips to produce a youthful effect.
The main ingredient in all three Restylane® products, hyaluronic acid, is a substance that is naturally found in the body to retain moisture and improve elasticity in the skin. Because this product does not spread from the injection site, it is perfect for distinct and precise lines. It is used to fill in laugh lines and to fill in the lips. Restylane Lyft® can be used similar to Juvéderm® Voluma to augment volume of the cheek areas and along the mandible and jaw. Restylane® Silk is used for the fine lines around the mouth. Restylane® injections can last for up to six to 12 months.
How is Restylane® Administered?
A typical Restylane® treatment usually lasts 30 minutes, but it could be more or less, depending on the number of areas being treated and the severity of the wrinkles. After thoroughly cleansing the face, the practitioner may mark the areas to be injected. Then, the practitioner will slowly apply the Restylane® using a soft cannula until the patient’s desired shape and contours are created. Most patients report no pain after the initial injection prick, but numbing cream can be used before the treatment to enhance the patient’s comfort. The practitioner will continue adding Restylane® to the needed areas until the patient’s face has regained its youthful contours with volume restored and lines and furrows softened.
What Are the Different Types of Restylane®?
All of the products in the Restylane® line are injectable, hyaluronic acid-based fillers that replenish lost volume. Each product is specifically formulated to maximize results depending on what treatment a patient desires.
- Restylane® Silk – FDA-approved for smoothing wrinkles around the mouth and providing subtle lip enhancement. It is composed of finer particles than other Restylane® products, allowing for a more precise and delicate contour.
- Restylane® Lyft – The first FDA-approved filler to treat volume loss in the back of the hands. It can also be used for cheek augmentation and to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles (such as smile lines). Lyft can last up to 18 months (with needing a retouch) and includes the topical painkiller lidocaine in its formula to minimize discomfort.
- Restylane® Defyne and Restylane® Refyne – Specifically formulated to treat volume loss in the lower face and around the mouth, targeting conditions like smile lines and marionette lines. Both Defyne and Refyne have a more flexible chemical makeup, reducing the “frozen” look that has been associated with fillers and providing you with natural-looking results. Restylane® Refyne is used to treat more mild and superficial fine lines and wrinkles, whereas Restylane® Defyne treats moderate to severe cases.
What is Recovery like After Restylane® Treatment?
Patients will be able to see results from their Restylane® treatment immediately. Patients should avoid strenuous activities and exercise for that day, but normal and light activities can be started as soon as the patient feels able. For the first day after the treatment, patients should avoid pressing on or manipulating the treated areas. Patients are advised to sleep with their head propped up on several pillows for the first night. Results from the Restylane® family of fillers usually last from 10 months to two years, but patients may consider getting treatments as needed to maintain their results.
