A woman’s body inevitably changes dramatically after a pregnancy; this is no surprise to mothers, as they watch the changes occur during the process of creating a new life.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

The mommy makeover procedure was designed for mothers who have not been able to go back to their pre-pregnancy bodies, even after extensive exercise and a strict diet. The mommy makeover is a cosmetic surgery that revitalizes and reshapes areas of the body that have changed due to pregnancy skin stretching and weight gain. A typical mommy makeover includes a breast augmentationtummy tuckbreast lift, and liposuction. In some cases, a labiaplasty is also incorporated in the overall procedure.

Because the abdomen and breasts are two of the areas that exhibit the most changes during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, a mommy makeover will usually focus on breast and abdomen.

It’s natural for the breasts to become larger as a result of pregnancy. After breastfeeding, however, the breasts may sag and look deflated. A mommy makeover can restore the size and shape of the breasts or even enhance them past their pre-pregnancy appearance.

During pregnancy, the skin and muscles in the abdomen stretch to accommodate the growing fetus. However, after childbirth, it’s difficult for these tissues to bounce back to their pre-pregnancy shape, causing them to lose their tautness. A mommy makeover can eliminate loose skin and tighten the remaining skin and the abdominal muscles.

What Is the Preparation Process for a Mommy Makeover?

You will not have to make significant lifestyle changes if you are coming in for a mommy makeover procedure. The most important thing is that you be as close to your ideal weight as possible. As will all surgeries, smoking must be stopped 4 weeks prior to the procedure as smoking can affect blood circulation and delay the healing process. Any medications including for example certain vitamins and herbal medications, fish oil, and NSAIDs which can lead to increased bleeding must also be discontinued 10 days prior to the procedure.

What is the Procedure like During a Mommy Makeover?

During the initial consultation, Dr. Rothaus will listen to your aesthetic goals and tailor an individualized surgical plan that best suits your goals. He will also discuss all the aspects of the procedure and the surgical techniques he will use during the surgery. Because there are multiple procedures incorporated in the mommy makeover, the surgical plan will be customized and vary with each patient. For many, a combination of techniques will tighten the skin and muscles of the abdomen, reshape the body for a more natural and appealing contour, restore shape and volume to the breasts, and eliminate stubborn areas of fat.

A mommy makeover can be done in one operation or as a staged procedure in a series of operations. Dr. Rothaus prefers to plan a series of procedures separated in time. In that manner, they can each be performed as an outpatient procedure. The recovery varies from patient to patient and from procedure to procedure. As a single staged procedure, it is a longer surgery requiring an overnight stay in the hospital. In such situations, the mommy makeover is performed under general anesthesia and, depending on how many procedures are combined, can take more than four to eight hours.

What is the Recovery Process After a Mommy Makeover?

Recovery from any major surgery can be challenging. Full recovery from your mommy makeover can take between six to 12 weeks, although most patients can return to their normal routine within three to four weeks. Exercise is discouraged for at least three weeks post-surgery.

It is vital to follow the post-surgical care directions of Dr. Rothaus and his staff as closely as possible. This is for your benefit to minimize the chance of complications and, hopefully result in a more comfortable recovery process.

Childcare and performing certain routine household chores may be difficult for a time, so you may need to arrange for childcare and help around the house. Heavy lifting must be avoided, since it can affect healing and recovery

Normal surgical scars are common and expected depending on the procedure. Because of this, it is important to find a skilled and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon well versed in the complex mommy makeover procedures to perform the surgery. An experienced surgeon like Dr. Rothaus will ensure that scarring is kept at a minimum and that the results are gorgeous and long-lasting.
