In combination with derma fillers, cheek augmentation can give patients a more vibrant and youthful appeal. Volumizing fillers such as Voluma®, Sculptra® and Restylane® Lyft can present viable alternatives to cheek implant surgery. Rothaus Plastic Surgery provides skilled cheek augmentation to patients in New York and surrounding areas of New York. Manhattan plastic surgeon, Dr. Kenneth O. Rothaus, has a lot of experience in cheek augmentation and will discuss with you the size and shape you will need to beautifully contour your face and the best technique for you.

What Are Cheek Implants?

Cheek implants help bring balance and harmony to the face and create the appearance of strong cheekbones. This procedure uses solid silicone implants to enhance facial contouring and eliminate the drawn, gaunt look present with weak cheekbones. Patients who benefit most from this procedure are young adults with a deficient cheek structure, older individuals with signs of aging, and patients who have gone through facial trauma.

Who is a Good Candidate for Cheek Augmentation Surgery?

Good candidates for cheek augmentation surgery are men and women who demonstrate:

  • Hollow cheeks
  • Cheeks that droop or sag
  • Weak cheekbones
  • A lack of definition to the midface

How Does Cheek Augmentation Surgery Work?

Prior to surgery, the appropriate size and shape of the implant will be chosen that meets the patient’s aesthetic goals. During surgery, a “pocket” will be surgically created within the bone of the cheek to hold the implant. The implant is inserted through an incision that is typically made inside the mouth, through the eyelid, or through a facelift incision. Once the implant is secure in its final position, the incision will be closed, which involves sutures on the inside of the mouth. In some cases, the sutures will be absorbable, while in other cases, they will need to be removed about one to two weeks after surgery.

What is the Recovery like After Cheek Augmentation Surgery?

Performed in an accredited outpatient surgical facility, cheek augmentation surgery is done under general anesthesia. After surgery, the cheeks will be swollen and bruised for several days, and the cheeks will feel stretched and tight, but patients will begin to see their results almost immediately. It could take up to one to two months for the swelling to disappear and it will take several months for normal feeling and sensation to return. Patients will be able to resume their normal activities in about seven to 10 days; exercise can be resumed approximately three to four weeks after surgery.
