What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

A breast reduction surgery reduces and reshapes the breasts by removing excess tissue, skin, and fat. This procedure can be done for both cosmetic and medical reasons as excessively large breasts can cause discomfort, skin rashes, back and shoulder pain, and other physical ailments.

Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?

While it is not a rule, we recommend a breast reduction procedure be considered only after breast development has stopped. Ongoing growth, breast-feeding, and childbirth may all affect the size and shape of the breasts. A candidate for this procedure would include patients with:

  • Excessively large breasts that are disproportionate to a person’s body
  • Physical ailments and skin irritation caused by the weight of the breasts
  • Physical restrictions on activities due to the weight and size of the breasts
  • Grooves or indentations on the shoulders due to bra straps

What Happens During the Consultation?

Prior to breast reduction surgery, you will discuss your desired outcome with Dr. Rothaus.

You will also talk about any existing medical conditions, past treatments or surgeries, and drug allergies. It is important to disclose if you have a family history of breast cancer. It is important to inform Dr. Rothaus as well the date of your last mammogram, if you have every had an abnormal mammogram, and ever had the need for needle or excisional biopsies.

During the consultation, Dr. Rothaus will recommend the best course of treatment for your breast reduction according to your needs, current health, and medical history. He will evaluate your general health status, and a breast examination will be conducted. Dr. Rothaus will also discuss use the various surgical options, types of anesthesia, risks and complications, and expected results.

What to Expect from Breast Reduction?

Depending on the patient’s preference and the initial consultation with Dr. Rothaus, a breast reduction often results in one to two breast cups smaller than the original size. During the first six weeks after surgery, Dr. Rothaus will recommend using a sports bra to support the breasts. Recovery time varies from patient to patient, but most patients can resume moderate work within seven to 10 days and physical activities, such as exercise, within three to four weeks after surgery.

What is the Breast Reduction Procedure?

Breast reductions involve three components:

  • Re-positioning of the nipple and areola
  • Reduction of the volume of the breast
  • Reshaping of the skin

The breast reduction is most commonly under general anesthesia to facilitate the safest and most comfortable procedure surgery. None of the procedures Dr. Rothaus commonly employs require separating the nipple from its underlying blood supply. Liposuction may rarely be used in conjunction with a breast reduction. There are three different parts to the incision during the procedure:

  • An incision will always be made around the areola
  • There is always a vertical incision starting at six o‘clock at the bottom of the areola
  • There is often a horizontal incision making an “L“ or “T“ pattern

How Much Does a Breast Reduction Cost?

The overall price for breast reduction surgery is determined based on several factors: any required medical tests, medications, post-surgery garments, anesthesia fee, hospital or facility charges, and the surgeon’s fee.

Some insurance plans cover the cost of breast reduction procedures. If Dr. Rothaus thinks your reduction procedure meets the necessary criteria his office will request authorization from the insurance company before doing the surgery. Once (and if) authorization is secured, you will be able to set a schedule for your surgery.

Real Patient Testimonials

Two and half weeks ago I had a face lift and Dr Rothaus did an amazing job! I had very little discomfort and very little bruising. I went to lunch with my sister in law one week after the surgery and she didn’t notice. When I told her she couldn’t believe how great I looked. Dr Rothaus is an artist and more importantly a wonderful man.
