Neck Lift in NYC

Convenient Locations in NYC and Westchester

Gain better neck contours without the handing skin and excess fat with neck lift in our Manhattan locations. Over time, natural changes in the body such as weight fluctuations and aging may change the elasticity of skin. A neck lift, performed by Manhattan plastic surgeon, Dr. Kenneth Rothaus, addresses this skin irregularity by removing the excess skin and fat, tightening the remaining skin for a more contoured appearance, and tightening the underlying muscle. Rothaus Plastic Surgery welcomes patients from NYC, Manhattan, Westchester, the Upper East Side, and the nearby communities.

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift can take years off your appearance by getting rid of sagging skin or superfluous fat pockets located within the chin and neck region. This combination aims to rejuvenate and restore a more youthful appearance.

Neck lift surgery can dramatically improve the profile of the neck, creating a more defined jawline and eliminating neck bands. This procedure is often combined with the use of LipoAI to aid in achieving additional skin tightening and to remove excess fat through liposuction. In addition, Dr. Rothaus may recommend the procedure on the neck be combined with a mentoplasty (chin implant) or chin filler to further help improve the contour of the neck. The combination can create amazing results.

Neck Lift Under Local

Dr. Rothaus offers the unique option of having a neck lift performed under local anesthesia. This means the patient is awake during the procedure, eliminating the need for sedation. The benefits to this are decreased downtime, no recovery from anesthesia in the post-operative period, reduced nausea and lower cost.

This is done by anesthetizing the whole neck with lidocaine, or a similar numbing agent, which ensures that you do not feel sharp pain throughout the procedure. We also offer ProNox which is a patient-controlled analgesic agent that contains nitric oxide and oxygen. When this is breathed in, patients will feel instantly more relaxed and have decreased pain sensation. This combination is well-tolerated by most patients and is a great option for those that do not want some of the negative side effects of sedation anesthesia. Patients can go home immediately after the procedure and often feel well as soon as the next day.

Who is a Good Candidate for the Neck Lift Procedure?

Good candidates are men or women who demonstrate:

  • Loose neck skin and/or neck muscle
  • Localized fat deposits under the chin
  • Non-smokers or those who have ceased smoking at least two months prior to the procedure
  • Overall good health

Consultation

During the initial consultation, Dr. Rothaus will evaluate the patient’s profile and individual anatomy in order to create a customized treatment plan. A thorough discussion of your medical history will take place. You will be asked about any underlying conditions, current medications, and past cosmetic procedures.

How Does the Neck Lift Procedure Work?

The procedure begins with numbing the area with a local anesthetic such as lidocaine, to properly ensure that no pain is felt throughout the surgery. Dr. Rothaus uses the Harmonic scalpel for all neck lift procedures which is a unique surgical instrument that cauterizes as it cuts. This means that we minimize the amount of bleeding and subsequent bruising that can occur, ultimately decreasing overall pain and downtime after the procedure.

If plication of the muscle is required, an incision is made under the chin to trim any loose skin. Then if excess fat needs to be removed, laser liposuction is performed which helps to stimulate collagen production and provide additional skin tightening. The net effect is to produce a more youthful neck appearance.

What is the Recovery like After a Neck Lift Procedure?

Swelling and bruising are usually minimal after neck lift surgery. A compressive neck dressing is used for the first 24 hours to help control swelling and prevent excess bleeding. Most patients can resume modest activity 48-72 hours after the procedure. Recovery from neck lift surgery occurs in about 3-7 days, depending on the individual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a neck lift painful?

Neck lift surgery is well-tolerated by most patients. We offer the option to have the procedure done under sedation, so you are fully asleep, or under local anesthesia while awake. No matter which option you choose, our team ensures your comfort throughout the surgery so you do not feel pain. During the recovery process, you may notice some tightness or discomfort behind the ears, but Dr. Rothaus makes sure all patients are on a proper pain medication regimen suitable to their needs to ensure you are comfortable.

When will I see the results of my neck lift?

You may see some initial tightening results right after surgery, but most changes will be hidden by swelling and bruising. In the weeks after your neck lift, you’ll see continued improvements. It typically takes about six weeks to see the final result.

When can I return to work?

When you can go back to work can depend on the type of job you have. For a desk job, you’ll likely be able to return to work in a few days. More strenuous jobs will require more time off. Dr. Rothaus will give you specific instructions on when you can get back to work in a safe and timely manner.

When can I start working out again?

You can start doing light aerobic activities after a few days, but for more strenuous exercise, you’ll want to wait 2-4 weeks. At your follow-up appointments, Dr. Rothaus will look at how your incisions are healing and then determine if you’re ready to start working out again.

Can a neck lift address a double chin?

Yes, a neck lift can address a double chin, especially if it’s caused by excess skin and fat or loose neck muscles. Dr. Rothaus can remove excess skin, eliminate excess fat (sometimes with liposuction), and tighten the remaining skin and muscles to give you a more defined chin and jawline.

Can a neck lift be combined with other cosmetic procedures?

Yes! A neck lift is often combined with a facelift, liposuction, chin augmentation, and nonsurgical treatments like Botox or dermal fillers.

Will I be awake during my neck lift?

We offer neck lift surgeries under both sedation and local anesthesia. Some patients do not tolerate anesthesia and have post-operative nausea or other side effects, while others simply do not want the downtime that occurs after being sedated. Therefore, we are happy to offer those patients a neck lift while they are awake. For this option we use local anesthetic to numb the entire area so you do not feel any pain. We also prescribe anti-anxiety medications to help ease nerves. If patients prefer to be asleep during the procedure, then we perform the surgery with a board-certified anesthesiologist present and provide sedation anesthesia. This will put you to sleep and ensure you’re completely comfortable throughout surgery.
