Tattoos have always been popular among both men and women. Millions of people in our country have them, and they can be a symbol of self-expression and art. While many individuals love their tattoos for years to come, some choose to have them removed because they feel having the tattoo no longer looks desirable or fits their current image. Dr. Kenneth Rothaus offers laser tattoo removal treatments to patients residing in NYC, Manhattan, Westchester, and the neighboring communities.
What is Laser Tattoo Removal?
Laser tattoo removal uses light energy, which is absorbed by the ink within the tattoo, causing it to fragment and leaving a faded area that was once filled with color. Laser tattoo removal is effective and safe, and offers people an option when it comes to removing their tattoo. Our office uses the Spectra laser, as well as the Medlite IV laser to safely remove tattoos. Both offer great outcomes and can be tailored to meet the individual patient’s needs. Laser tattoo removal takes a series of treatment sessions to attain the final result, and in most cases, it does not leave a scar but may result in a slight lightening in skin color.
About Our Lasers
• Spectra Laser
The Spectra laser is manufactured by Lutronic and has become what most cosmetic surgeons consider, the gold standard for removing tattoos with Q-switched lasers. The effective removal of tattoo ink is reliant on the principle of photothermolysis, meaning the proper wavelength is what will effectively target and be absorbed by the ink. The Spectra has various wavelengths and handpieces that allow for effective clearance of almost all tattoo pigment colors. It targets the tattoo pigment predominantly and, although there may be some initial skin reaction, this generally quickly resolves without serious issues.
• MedLite Laser
The MedLite laser uses pulsed wavelengths of energy light to remove tattoo ink. The specific wavelength of light, chosen based on the color of the tattoo, passes through the skin and is absorbed by the ink. This intense light energy causes the ink inside the tattoo to disintegrate and break into tiny particles, which can be removed by the body’s natural elimination filtering process. The MedLite laser, offered by our cosmetic surgery offices, provides maximum tattoo removal with minimal to no effect on the surrounding skin.
How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?
Laser tattoo removal takes place within our cosmetic surgery office. It is a very quick and easy treatment session that typically spans numerous appointments. A topical anesthetic cream is initially placed over the tattoo. The appropriate wavelength of laser light will be focused on and passed over the tattoo. Some patients may feel slight stinging during the appointment. A healing solution is applied to the tattoo after the treatment is finished. Depending on the size and color variation of the tattoo, this process will need to be repeated more than once per the doctor’s recommendation.
