What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra® is an FDA-approved injectable filler that contains poly-L-lactic acid (commonly known as PLLA). PLLA stimulates collagen growth in the areas where it is administered, replenishing volume and making it an effective treatment for wrinkles and facial folds.

What is Sculptra and How Long Does it Last?

How Long Does Sculptra Last?

Once injected, the Sculptra® is absorbed over a period of approximately six weeks and is replaced by your own collagen. Studies have shown that more than 80% of this collagen remains after two years. Sculptra® must be injected in a very diluted solution in small amounts at each session. For that reason, it often takes three sessions spaced six weeks apart to achieve the desired result. In many ways, that is a positive, as it allows the patient to view the change as it occurs and alleviates any concerns about over correction.

How Sculptra® Works to Restore Volume

Sculptra® is a unique biostimulatory aesthetic injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a safe, FDA-approved ingredient that works differently than traditional dermal fillers. Instead of simply adding volume, Sculptra injections are placed in the treated area where they help stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. Over time, this gradual process restores lost volume, enhances skin thickness, and improves skin quality.

The Benefits of Sculptra® for Facial Rejuvenation

Sculptra® offers benefits that extend beyond temporary volume replacement. Unlike other fillers that deliver immediate but short-lived changes, Sculptra results appear gradually, creating a youthful glow and natural-looking results that can last up to two years or longer. Patients notice an improved skin tone, reduced fine lines and wrinkles, and a firmer texture as the treatment continues to stimulate the production of natural collagen beneath the surface.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Sculptra®?

Most patients seeking to correct volume loss, sunken cheeks, or wrinkles are excellent candidates for a Sculptra treatment. It is especially effective for those who want to enhance their appearance without the “overfilled” look sometimes associated with other fillers.

Not everyone is suitable; patients with a history of keloid scars, active skin infections at the injection site, or those on blood thinners may not qualify. A consultation with an experienced healthcare provider will determine whether Sculptra® is right for you.

How is Sculptra® Administered?

Sculptra® treatments are performed inside our plastic surgery center during an in-office appointment. The medication is pre-mixed with a local anesthetic for comfort and is injected through a small soft cannula. The procedure is mostly painless, but any discomfort will be controlled with cold compressions and ice packs (in addition to the local anesthesia). The number of syringes used to attain the desired results will be discussed prior to treatment. The dosage will depend on the number of areas where volume restoration is required.

What is Recovery like After Sculptra® Treatment?

There will be some mild swelling and redness at the injection sites immediately following a Sculptra® treatment. These side effects will subside quickly and normal activities can be resumed; however, exercise should be avoided for 24 hours. Sculptra® is different from other injectable fillers because the results do not happen immediately. They take place over time because of the ongoing collagen production process. The final results can usually be seen a few weeks after the treatment and will typically last up to two years.

Common Treatment Areas for Sculptra®

Sculptra® is versatile and can be used in multiple treatment areas of the face to restore youthful looking skin. The most popular regions include:

  • Sagging or hollow cheeks
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Jawline
  • Temples and brow

By addressing these concerns, patients experience remarkable results that rejuvenate their overall appearance.

Sculptra® for Cheeks, Jawline, and Temples

Three of the most commonly requested areas for Sculptra injections are the cheeks, jawline, and temples. In the cheek area, Sculptra® restores lost volume to correct sunken cheeks and revive a youthful appearance. Along the jawline, it subtly defines facial structure and reduces the look of sagging. In the temples, where natural fat often diminishes with age, Sculptra® restores fullness, creating balance across the upper face.

How Many Sculptra® Sessions Will You Need?

Because Sculptra treatment works by stimulating natural collagen production, most patients will need a series of multiple injections spaced several weeks apart. Typically, three sessions performed about six weeks apart provide the best results. Our team will create a customized plan tailored to achieve natural-looking results over time.

What to Expect Over Time

Unlike traditional fillers, Sculptra® is not about instant gratification. After your first session, you may notice mild swelling at the injection site, which typically resolves quickly. Over the following weeks, new collagen production begins, and skin quality gradually improves. With each subsequent session, your youthful glow becomes more noticeable.

Sculptra® vs. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

While both hyaluronic acid fillers and Sculptra can address fine lines, wrinkles, and volume loss, they work in different ways. Hyaluronic acid provides immediate plumping but is temporary, lasting six to twelve months. Sculptra®, on the other hand, uses L-lactic acid (PLLA) to stimulate the body’s own natural collagen production. Many patients choose Sculptra® when they want to restore foundational support rather than just temporarily “fill in” lines.

Combining Sculptra® with Other Treatments

For enhanced results, Sculptra® can be combined with other fillers, wrinkle relaxers like Botox®, or skin treatments to target multiple signs of aging. For example, while Sculptra® restores volume and stimulates the production of new collagen, hyaluronic acid fillers can refine delicate areas, and laser or resurfacing treatments can further enhance skin quality. A customized plan ensures that each treated area is addressed for the most comprehensive rejuvenation.

Real Patient Testimonials

I worked with Dr. Rothaus and saw firsthand both his compassion for patients and his skill and artistry as a surgeon. He also performed surgery on me. Excellent results, no bruising, very minimal swelling and no real post-operative pain – just some discomfort that was manageable with over-the-counter medication.
