Our Manhattan plastic surgery office offers numerous non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments ranging from laser resurfacing and chemical peels, to injectable fillers and microdermabrasion. A newer treatment that has shown to offer effective and beautiful results is microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a non-invasive procedure that improves skin texture and tone and produces fresher, newer-looking skin. This procedure uses a tool that contains tiny needles that create small holes in the skin, which disrupts the skin. Through this disruption process, elastin and collagen are produced so that the skin can essentially heal itself. There is no tissue destruction or long-term damage in the process because the holes close quickly; and once they do, the skin is left looking smoother and softer. This procedure is quick with little downtime and is generally safe for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin.
How Does Microneedling Work?
Before a microneedling treatment begins, our practitioner will clean the skin thoroughly and a topical ointment is applied, which helps to numb the skin so that there is no discomfort. A sterile tip with numerous micro-needles is attached to a handheld device, which is then passed gently over the skin as the devices rapidly moves the needles up and down. The device is continually moved in a single direction until the entire area has been addressed. Patients are treated with a topical anesthetic cream before the treatment and may report very mild discomfort during this process. The holes that are created on the skin are known as “micro channels,” which will close quickly once the procedure is completed.
Our office uses the Venus Viva™ and the EndyMed™ Intensif treatment devices for microneedling. Both of these devices use intense, precision heat to create micro-injuries in the skin.
What Should I Expect from Recovery After Microneedling?
Once a microneedling procedure is complete, our patients can expect their skin to look bright red, similar to a sunburn. This redness begins to decrease over the course of about a few days to a week. This healing process varies per patient based on the number of times the needles passed over the treatment area. Once the skin completely heals, it will look brighter, softer, and smoother. Dr. Rothaus will recommend specific creams and/or serums after this treatment to use as follow-up treatment at home. This is due to the fact that it is felt that microneedling allows for an improved absorption of creams, so applying these gels and ointments will help to optimize and accelerate results.
When Will I See Results from Microneedling?
Within days and weeks following a microneedling treatment, patients will see a marked improvement in fine lines, pigmentation, and rough, dull skin. Most patients tell us that they feel like their skin is “glowing.” Microneedling is also a great treatment to help diminish scars, acne, and stretch marks. It can be used on the face, neck, and chest. The average patient generally needs about two to three treatments to get the best possible results.
