The Manhattan cosmetic surgery practice of Dr. Kenneth Rothaus offers patients numerous options for nonsurgical skin rejuvenation. Microdermabrasion is one of our more popular noninvasive skin treatments, which is a gentle sanding procedure using salt granules to smooth the skin. We offer this procedure to individuals living in NYC, Manhattan, Westchester, and the nearby communities.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is used for smoothing the outer layers of the skin and helping accelerate the removal of areas of hyperpigmentation. This is often used in conjunction with glycolic peels and non-ablative laser resurfacing procedures. Any individual, including both men and women, with skin irregularities may consider this treatment. It’s safe and effective for those who have hyperpigmentation, abnormal skin growths, and fine lines. Patients desiring to have microdermabrasion should avoid using certain acne medications prior to treatment.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

Microdermabrasion penetrates and exfoliates the top layer of skin, removing the superficial layer of dead skin cells. During the treatment, patients feel no discomfort and are often relaxed during the process. The skin is first prepared with a cleanser and cooling agent, and then, using a handheld device, the skin is buffed and polished using a stream of granules to disrupt damaged, dry, or dead skin cells. It is frequently followed by a gentle glycolic peel for even greater results. This treatment is especially helpful for melasma patients and those with pigmentation problems. After this procedure, it is important to avoid sun exposure.

What is Recovery like After Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion recovery is almost immediate. Most patients are able to resume their normal skin regime the next day, including wearing makeup and working out. Patients remark how much smoother and softer their skin looks and feels, and they immediately see a slight reduction in skin irregularities. Patients who are on a scheduled treatment plan often return for additional treatments. In addition, it is common to combine microdermabrasion with other nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatments such as glycolic peels, Botox®, fillers, or laser procedures.
