Nearly one in four men between the ages of 50 and 70 suffer from gynecomastia, which is an often embarrassing growth of male breast tissue. Top New York City plastic surgeon, Dr. Kenneth Rothaus, has a trusted record treating patients with gynecomastia by performing male breast reduction surgery to restore his patient’s body confidence and restoring a more masculine appearing chest wall. Rothaus Plastic Surgery offers gynecomastia surgery to men living in New York City, the Upper East Side, Manhattan, Westchester, and the surrounding communities of New York.
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia, or a feminization of the male breast, is the result of excessive growth of the small amounts of breast tissue present in males. This condition often starts in puberty and is one of the most common conditions affecting male body confidence. The cause of gynecomastia is usually not identified but can be seen in conjunction with hormonal imbalances.
Who is a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?
The best candidates for male breast reduction surgery are men with larger than normal breasts who wish to reduce their size. The patient should be at or near his optimal weight to avoid additional surgery. If the increase in breast tissue and fatty tissue has caused the skin to stretch and the breast to sag, Dr. Rothaus may use a skin tightening technique to improve the aesthetic result.
What is the Procedure for Gynecomastia Surgery?
During the procedure, Dr. Rothaus will use a combination of surgical excision and liposuction to remove the excess tissue in the breasts. Usually, Dr. Rothaus will make an incision around the areola to minimize scarring, but in extreme cases (and very rarely) additional incisions and surgical techniques may be employed such as re-positioning the nipple. After surgery, bruising and swelling can be expected and should resolve within one to three weeks. The patient is required to wear a compression garment for two weeks after surgery to help with swelling. Heavy lifting and straining during exercise must be avoided for at least three weeks or until clearance is given by Dr. Rothaus.
