Over time the body’s shape and contour changes and areas begin to move or become loose. Unfortunately, one of the regions that this is most noticeable in is one’s butt.

What is a Butt Lift?

A butt lift surgery is a procedure that removes loose, sagging skin from the bottom and lifts tissue from this area to create a tighter and toned buttocks. For patients who are healthy and exercise regularly yet need assistance achieving a smoothed, toned rear end, butt lift surgery may be a viable option for you. This surgery creates a tighter butt and a shapelier silhouette; but more importantly, it allows patients to be free to wear the clothes they desire, move about more freely, and exercise without having a saggy butt. During butt lift surgery, Manhattan plastic surgeon, Dr. Kenneth O. Rothaus, carefully removes excess skin and pulls the remaining skin tight creating a more toned contour. A butt lift may be combined with a butt augmentation procedure to achieve a patient’s optimum aesthetic goal.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Butt Lift?

A surgical butt lift is reserved for patients who have loose, hanging skin on and under the buttock. Weight loss patients are usually great candidates for this procedure because once the weight has been lost, the skin typically does not shrink back to its natural state. This surgery removes the skin and creates a normal appearance.

Your Initial Consultation

Before you can undergo a butt lift, Dr. Rothaus must assess your lifestyle and current health status during a consultation; this will ensure that you’re healthy enough for the surgery. You will be advised to complete a few preoperative laboratory tests and make certain healthy choices prior to the surgery. This will positively influence your recovery rate.

Preparing for Butt Lift Surgery

For several weeks before the date of your butt lift, you will need to avoid smoking. Smoking negatively affects the health of our skin and soft tissues, resulting in an increased chance of complications.

Because you will be sedated or under a general anesthesia, you will not be able to drive a car or even leave the office on your own immediately after your butt lift surgery. Because of this, part of preparing for a butt lift is arranging in advance for a family member or friend to take you home. If you are the primary caregiver at home, it is also advisable to arrange for help during recovery.

The day before surgery, avoid eating or drinking after midnight. Since you will be placed under sedation for the surgery, you should not eat or drink anything after midnight. An empty stomach prevents complications such as nausea. In case you accidentally eat or drink something after midnight the day of your scheduled surgery, inform Dr. Rothaus immediately.

What is the Procedure for a Butt Lift?

Butt lift surgery typically consists of incisions made across the top of the buttocks or in the infra-gluteal crease (underneath the butt cheeks, where the cheek meets the upper thigh). During the procedure, any loose or hanging skin will be cut away and the remaining skin will be lifted and pulled securely into a new position. Sutures are used to securely hold the skin in its new position. In some cases, liposuction may be needed to remove existing, unwanted fat pockets. After the healing process, there will be minimal scarring; however, it will not be visible because of the placement of the incision.

What is the Recovery from Butt Lift Surgery Like?

Taking approximately two hours to fully complete, butt lift surgery is an outpatient procedure generally performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. There will be bruising and swelling near the incision area, and walking will be difficult the first few days after surgery. A full recovery from this surgery is usually evident within three to six months. With a healthy lifestyle and diet, the surgical results should last a lifetime.
