About Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are faded stripes or streaks on the skin that are caused by distension (expansion) of the skin. Most commonly found in patients who have gained and lost weight, either through pregnancy or general weight loss, stretch marks can be annoying and unsightly for both men and women. The can be found on the abdomen, upper arms, thighs, hips, breasts, and lower back. The appearance of the break down of the dermis caused by the skin stretching can be improved with radiofrequency and laser treatment. Manhattan cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Kenneth Rothaus, offers laser skin treatments that address stretch marks specifically. This treatment lightens the appearance of stretch marks and in many cases significantly reduces their visibility.

Treatment For Stretch Marks

An estimated 90% of women have stretch marks as a result of the rapid growth of the skin associated with pregnancy, weight gain and puberty. They are frequently seen in men not only because of weight gain, but also often around the upper arm and chest as a result of sports and weight lifting. Although they are completely benign, they are often aesthetically unpleasant and a source of profound irritation. Notoriously difficult to treat, women and men have long struggled with ways to make them appear more cosmetically acceptable. Unfortunately, very few treatments have proven effective.

Now, however, there are new ways to effectively treat stretch marks. The EndyMed and ThermiSmooth radiofrequency devices and the Lux 1540 laser are all FDA approved treatments for laser skin resurfacing. They may be applied singly or in combination for the treatment of cellulite as well.  Delivering focused energy deep into the dermis and epidermis, the laser beam creates small areas of a controlled injury under the skin. As these areas heal, new collagen and elastin is generated, promoting the growth of healthier looking skin. The radiofrequency devices heat the skin and underlying tissue inducing the deposition of new collagen and tightening of the skin. Our New York City office has been using fractional laser and radiofrequency technologies for years for facial resurfacing, treatment of brown spots, and scar revision with great results. We are now proud to offer a possible relief for patients who want to address their stretch marks using thses same technologies.

During The Procedure

During laser and radiofrequency treatments for stretch marks, the handheld device will glide over the area that is to be addressed. Patients generally do not feel any discomfort during treatment. They will feel some warmth as the laser and RF energy move through the skin. After the treatment is over, the skin may appear red. It typically takes multiple sessions to attain the desired results, that being a tighter skin surface with less apparent stretch marks.
