About RF Skin Resurfacing

In addition to the laser skin resurfacing technologies offered at our Manhattan plastic surgery office, Dr. Rothaus also provides patients with several radiofrequency skin resurfacing options. The RF or radiofrequency medical device uses a form of energy that is very different from the energy emitted from a laser. Instead, radio frequency uses a form of oscillating electrical energy that operates in a range of frequencies. As the RF energy passes through the tissues, it creates an oscillation that results in heat. This heat leads to a series of biochemical pathways that stimulate collagen and create a positive impact on the skin’s surface. The most common configurations for RF devices is either monopolar or bipolar. Examples of such devices at Rothaus Plastic Surgery include the Pelleve (monopolar), the EndyMed (bipolar) and the ThermiSmooth250 (predominantly monopolar).

RF Technologies We Offer

The non-invasive radiofrequency devices used at Rothaus Plastic Surgery include the:

The Pelleve is a monopolar RF device which we predominantly use in our practice for facial and neck rejuvenation. The Pelleve is a favorite among our nurses as it has some very small hand pieces which are very easy to use and give very nice results for rejuvenation above the brow and in the periorbital region. However, with its larger hand pieces, it can be used on the body as well.

The EndyMed is a bipolar RF device and is quite unique as each handpiece has 3 separate transmitters and 3 separate receivers. This creates a pattern of RF energy of three parallel paths but all at different depths beneath the skin. The result is a uniform RF effect over a wide area.

The ThermiSmooth-250 is a very high power, monopolar RF device that just recently received FDA approval. Our Manhattan office was one of the centers involved in the study.  This RF device is unique in that it has a temperature sensor built into the handpiece resulting in a very uniform and comfortable treatment.

What To Expect

Radiofrequency skin resurfacing is used to help diminish the appearance of wrinkles, pores, and fine lines. It creates a softer appearance and continues to stimulate collagen under the skin for continued results. Unlike laser skin resurfacing where the treatment results in immediate outcomes, radiofrequency treatments take longer for results to appear. Over a 3-6 month period, however, the results will become apparent revealing a fresher, softer and more youthful appearing skin.
